Summer school overview

Year 6 summer school 2021

In August 2021, two cohorts of our new starters in Year 7 enjoyed a week of in-school and off-site team building and transition activities that helped them make new friends and familiarise themselves with the layout of a new school.

Our Summer School programme was incredibly varied in character ranging from cookery and mask making, to drumming, circus skills, falconry, scientific experiments, PE/games and creative challenges in Maths and English. We even managed a school trip to Waddow Hall near Clitheroe for a day of activities in the forest!

Over 200 students attended (77% of the year group) with 22 teachers, pastoral leaders and support staff delivering the sessions.

As you can see from the photos and the parental evaluation, Summer School was a great success and was very much enjoyed by all who took part. The activities have no doubt assisted our smooth start to the new school year and it would be great if we could repeat the programme in future years.

My daughter has really enjoyed summer school, I'm really pleased she got the opportunity to do it, she said all the teachers were really nice. Thank you.

I cannot say enough good things about summer school. Toby has gained so much confidence, enjoyed every single day, learnt lots and he now feels much more confident of starting school in September. Sending him to summer school was probably the best decision I’ve made this summer!

In lieu of the usual single transition day I do think this week has actually been a lot better, and we are exceptionally grateful to the staff who have given up their summer holiday time in order to organise and supervise the week.

It’s been a fantastic week. XXX has really loved all the activities and can’t wait to start. Thank you all so much for putting so much energy into it.

My son had such an amazing time!!!!! I’m so happy and totally relaxed now about his transition to high school. Thank you to all the staff involved.

My son had a great time despite being slightly apprehensive. He has enjoyed a wide variety of activities and made new friends. A great start, thank you.

Brilliant idea, really good for all the children. Thank you!

It would have been helpful to see more of the inside of the school, and get to know it better.

A really worthwhile and valuable week! Thanks ever so much.

It was an excellent offering, saving the kids a whole summer of worry about life in their new school.
