Calderdale Childrens Book of the Year
Our team of 9 students from year 7 and 8 have been meeting this year after school in the LRC, to discuss the Calderdale Children's Book of the Year 4 selected titles.
We were given those by the Discover group from Calderdale libraries; the idea was to read them and write a review. It sounded daunting but as the meetings progressed I told the students that they would have a day trip to Halifax Town hall to join discussion groups, take part in quizzes, meet other schools and meet all 4 of the authors. We worked together and shared ideas - of course as this was after school the student’s commitment was rewarded by cake.
On the day we were all excited (me and Miss Bottomley included) the Town Hall in Halifax is fantastic and made it a real occasion. The main hall was busy with students and I must congratulate mine on wearing their uniforms, they looked exceptionally smart.. The day went quickly as we took part in lots of great activities and listened to fascinating talks from 2 of the 4 authors. Finally came the time to see what the students had voted for - Michelle Harrison, author of The Other Alice was the winner. Our students waited nervously to see if their reviews had been selected by the panel as being particularly interesting - Betsy Mills, Imogen Thresher, Dan Mateer, Tamlin Draper and Molly Harwood made us proud. We finished with book signings, chatting with the authors and the mayor before Mr Sutcliffe brought us back to school. The student’s behaviour was exceptional and I'm looking forward to being part of next year's activities.
