School Meals: Fuelling Minds and Bodies

At The Calder Learning Trust we believe that a well-nourished body leads to a well-focused mind. Our dedicated school diners provide nutritious and tasty meals to keep our young people energised and ready for learning.

Our in-house catering teams prepare and cook balanced meals for all pupils daily. Lunches are made on site in our primary and secondary kitchens using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Pupils can choose from meat and vegetarian options as well as jacket potatoes, paninis and sandwiches.

In January 2025, the Food Standards Agency  inspected us and awarded us a 5 star food hygiene rating.

What we offer

Our menus are refreshed each term with input from pupils. We offer a diverse menu, giving children daily choices. Every day, there are at least two vegetable or salad options with the main meal.

In addition to the main pudding choice, we provide options like fruit salad, yoghurt, and cheese and crackers daily. All meals are freshly prepared in our school kitchen by our in-house catering team.

We use locally sourced meat and vegetables, and all our supply lines have traceability certificates. Our meals adhere to the government nutrition guildelines, including recommendations on reducing salt and sugar.

We encourage children to try new foods and maintain a varied diet. Fresh drinking water is available for all pupils. We pride ourselves on offering a freindly, helpful, and flexible service.

Calder Primary School

Our primary school kitched is run by our primary chef, Stacey. She prepares fresh food daily and assists with the breakfast club in the mornings, and cooks and serves meals to the students at lunchtime. Stacey works closely with the catering manager to develop menus tailored to primary school children.

Cashless Catering

We operate a cashless catering system across the entire site in partnership with ParentPay, allowing secure payments to be made to your child's account. Activation letters will be sent out when your child starts with us or during July/August for all new Year 7 students.

If you haven't registered your ParentPay account yet, please do so, as all trips and school activites must be paid for via ParentPay. If you need a copy of your activation letter, please contact the school, perferably via email at parentenquiry@calderlearningtrust.com.

We have a set a daily spending limit of £5 for all students, and its up to them to manage their spending. If you wish to increase or decrease this amount, please contact the school to arrange this.

If your child does not have money on their account, we will ensure they can still access food. We will lend them money to purchase meals, including hot food, sandwiches, and a selection of drinks. We will inform your child when this happens.

Payments for food at Calder High are made via a biometric fingerprint scanner, which is a secure and efficeint way to identify students at till points. We register thumbprints at the beginning of Year 7. Our system does not take a full scan of your childs thumbprint; instead it measures parts of the thumbprint and stores this as a unique digital code for each student. This code is securely stored on our server and deleted when your child leaves The Calder Learning Trust.

The biometric consent form can be found here:

Biometric Consent Form

If you prefer not to have your child's fingerprint taken, that's not a problem. In this case we will simply ask for your child's name at the till point and verify their photo on our system.

Balances can be checked on the app or the ParentPay website. You can top up via card through these methods. If you prefer to top up with cash, this can be down at local shops by taking your barcoded letter with you to a PayPoint.
